Intensive Outpatient Program
OVERVIEW AND PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY
Affiliated Clinical Services is offering a two to four-week intensive outpatient program (IOP) for substance dependent or substance abusing teens and adults. It is our belief that substance abuse disorders occur on a continuum from episodic abuse to severe dependency and can be brought into remission through conscious decisions and focused behavior changes on the part of our clients. We view chemical dependency as an illness, which if left untreated, can be progressive and often fatal. Our program is designed to provide a supportive and solution-oriented intervention tailored to the individual. Treatment intensity, focus and length will be proportionate with the client’s needs.
The overall goal of the program is to provide a safe therapeutic environment that encourages and promotes recovery. Our program strives to provide a degree of flexibility to meet the individual needs of the patient. The program is abstinence-based and appropriate for individuals for whom abstaining appears warranted. To this end, our program attempts to support and foster healthy, responsible changes in behavior that can lead to healthier lives for the patient, their families and those in the community.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The intensive outpatient program offers individual and group counseling, which will include addiction education and relapse prevention. Participants are strongly encouraged to use outside resources such as AA/NA as well. Group topics will be client-driven (vs. program-driven) and tailored to address the specific recovery needs of the current group. Topics that might be group-specific include gender-specific coping skills, or recovering in a family with active substance abuse. Each client will be followed by an individual therapist concurrently for at least one hour per week and will receive complete case management services designed to specifically address his/her needs. This will include psychological testing or a psychiatric evaluation as needed. A physician will be available to provide medical and clinical consultation. Treatment services will be delivered by a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors, who will be supervised by the Program Director.
The Intensive Outpatient program for adults at ACS meets Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. The IOP for teens will meet Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Each day the group will meet for 2.75 hours. Each day will be split into education and group process. Group will start with a check-in for each patient. For the first 1.5 hours, patients will receive relevant education about substance dependence and related topics. The next 1.25 hours of the program will be group process, designed to anchor the presented topic to the patient’s life.
The support generated by the participation of family and significant others often plays a critical role in the success of a person’s recovery. Educating the family about addiction and recovery is usually helpful in the success of a person’s recovery process. Family involvement in the assessment and treatment process is strongly encouraged and may be integrated as a required part of treatment by the treatment provider, depending on the nature of the referral.
The length of the program will be between two week and for weeks, depending on the patient’s individual needs. Patients with greater coping skills, shorter AODA history and more social support will be transitioned to less intensive levels of treatment earlier.
PATIENT FOCUS
The program is designed for teens and adults with a primary DSM-IV diagnosis of substance abuse or substance dependence. Patients with co-morbid mental health diagnoses will also be included. All patients will be assessed prior to starting the program. They will be screened using the Wisconsin Universal placement Criteria. Patients who do not meet WI-UPC criteria for IOP will be given appropriate treatment options for outpatient therapy. Patients requiring medially-managed inpatient services will be referred to appropriate area hospitals consistent with their insurance coverage. We will have written agreements with the participating hospitals.
DISCHARGE CRITERIA
As stated above, the length of the IOP will vary from patient to patient. Each patient will be closely monitored and discharged when deemed appropriate. Aftercare plans will be established for each client and may include outpatient treatment (OP) and community support group. Primary outpatient program for Aftercare meets two to three times per week for 1.5 hours per session. Clients will continue to work on program materials and strengthen their outside support systems to ensure long term sobriety. ACS also offers a Relapse Prevention Program for both adults and teens with three + months of sobriety. In the Relapse Prevention Program clients will work to maintain their sobriety plan and use the group process and extra support structure to gain a long term sober lifestyle. Factors relevant to discharge include the client’s Global Assessment of Functioning, Universal Placement Criteria rating, degree of personal and family support, and presence of co-morbid mental health issues, the patient’s relapse and AODA history. Upon discharge from the IOP, the client will likely continue with their individual therapist and may attend some groups as part of their aftercare if deemed helpful.
FEES
The fee for the program will be $190.00 per day.
